Some of the key things we learnt about Vlan are:

  • Vlan ID can range from 0-4095, in some devices Vlan 1 is usually the default Vlan. Also, vlans 1-1005 is regarded as Standard Vlan while from 1006-4094 is called extended vlans. 0 and 4095 are reserved.
  • When you write erase a cisco switch, Vlan information will not be deleted unless you the delete from it the Vlan database also known as the Vlan.dat
  • VLAN tagged Ports or “trunked” port allows traffic to pass from multiple VLANs, whereas an untagged ports or “access” port accepts traffic for only a single VLAN.
  • Enterprise Virtual LAN Security can be implemented and enhanced using Vlan Access Map and VLAN Segmentation
  • Inter-vlan routing is an act or technique of allowing Vlans with different networks to interact with each other.
  • VTP also know as Vlan Trucking protocol, is used to propagate Vlan information using either server, client or transparent modes.
  • In a switch interface both voice and data vlans can be assigned to a single interface.
